    Training for in-house translators, technical editors, and project managers

Training

Thanks to its more than 45 years of experience with complex translation and localization projects, KERN offers a comprehensive training program for in-house translators, technical editors, and project managers. With their many years of practical experience, our trainers impart the expertise needed to implement your translation and localization projects via on-site and online training courses. This ranges from theoretical principles to training in the various tools for translation, terminology management, and desktop publishing programs through to training and workshops on individual topics selected by you.

In terms of content, the training sessions and workshops are oriented to the previous knowledge, experience, tasks, and requests of the participants. You are welcome to send us examples of files and concrete questions in advance so that we can use them as a basis for training and workshops. The following training overviews should therefore be seen as suggestions, which can, of course, be adapted to meet your individual needs.

The language training courses offered by KERN

TM systems

  • Beginners: You will learn the basics of computer-assisted translation and gain insight into the working environment of the requested translation memory system (e.g. Across – Personal Edition/Language Server, SDL Trados Studio, SDL Trados WorldServer, memoQ, etc.). Training can be focused on a particular topic, and participants can be translators or project managers.

  • Advanced users: The training can cover topics related to the processing of different file formats, special user and system settings, quality assurance measures in the translation process, alignments, database maintenance and, upon request, further topics agreed with you in advance related to the requested translation memory system. The focus areas are oriented to the participants' skills and roles.

Terminology management

  • Beginners: You learn the basics of terminology work and how to develop and structure terminology systematically. The goal with respect to the usability of a terminology database should be to find the translation of a designation in the source language quickly and with certainty in the respective context in the terminology database – whether during an editing or a translation process. You will also receive insight into the working environment of the requested terminology management system (e.g. crossTerm, MultiTerm, TermStar, etc.).

  • Advanced users: You learn about the possibilities that terminology extraction provides for creating or expanding a terminology database, how you can maintain terminology and make it available in a web-based manner within your company, how to develop guidelines for terminology, etc. During a workshop, a workflow can be developed, which can be a useful tool for managing the successive expansion and maintenance of the terminology database as well as validation and release processes. At this point, it is particularly important to record the number, roles and decision-making powers of the users. The result of this preparation forms part of the database structure assessment in order to be able to make a decision with regard to the text and picklist fields, which can affect the release status of an entry or a designation, for example. Moreover, an analysis of the previous approach for finding/creating designations with the goal of creating a structure in terminology guidelines can be the topic of a terminology workshop and it can be discussed how previously defined terminology processes can be integrated into diverse system environments.

DTP programs

For technical editors, KERN AG offers corresponding training in the established authoring and publishing solutions Adobe FrameMaker und Adobe InDesign.

Adobe FrameMaker
  • Beginners: You learn the basics and become familiar with the FrameMaker user interface in order to create professional documents from the start. The most important functions are explained to you, for example, different page types, formats, paragraph formats, catalogues, variables, and the creation of automatic lists and numbering. The book function as well as the creation of PDF files are also introduced.

  • Advanced users: If you already have a basic knowledge of FrameMaker, this seminar will deepen your knowledge: you will learn how to work with conditional and automatically generated texts, how to create templates, use template and reference pages, number chapters and pages, integrate images and graphics into texts, create glossaries, etc.

  • Experts: In the expert workshops, you will learn tricks that many experienced users don't even know: during the workshop, you can ask detailed questions relating to your individual documentation scenarios, optimization of the documentation for translation processes, special settings, code pages and MIF source code, structured and possibly XML-based FrameMaker scenarios.
Adobe InDesign
  • Beginners: You learn the basics and become familiar with the InDesign user interface in order to create professional documents from the start. The most important functions are explained to you, for example, the creation of documents and templates, working with levels and positioning aids, placing texts and images, and formatting paragraphs. The book function as well as the creation of PDF files are also introduced and you learn how to prepare the files for further processing, for example for printing.

  • Advanced users: If you already have a basic knowledge of InDesign, this seminar will deepen your knowledge: you will learn how to create automatic lists and numbering as well as automatically generated text modules, how to work with variables and cross-references, create glossaries, etc.

  • Experts: In the expert workshops, you will learn tricks that many experienced users don't even know: during the workshop, you can ask detailed questions relating to your individual documentation scenarios, optimization of the documentation for translation processes, special settings and meta data, the structure of multilingual documents, export formats such as INX and IDML, XML-based InDesign scenarios and quality assurance methods.

Quality assurance

KERN offers editors and proofreaders as well as project managers training and workshops on quality assurance measures in translation and localization processes.

  • Beginners: You will gain insight into fundamental quality assurance measures for translation and learn in which scenarios they can be employed meaningfully and effectively. You will be shown which measures are necessary for compliance with industry standards and norms such as DIN EN ISO 9001 and ISO 17100.

  • Advanced users: You will become familiar with automated quality assurance measures and receive insight into how formal checkers work in order to detect potential formal errors in translations using automated processes. This includes, for example, checking translations for completeness, consistency, spelling errors, terminology, numbers, correct use of tags, etc. The workshops can focus on the requested internal translation memory system QA tool or an independent one. Of course, the workshop can also delve into other quality assurance measures primarily conveyed during the Beginners' Workshop.

  • Experts: During the Expert Workshops, you will be given the opportunity to individually define quality assurance criteria and their implementation in the translation and/or localization workflow, possibly also with respect to a planned certification measure. The workshops can focus on the translation, website localization, or software localization processes.
