Professional graphic design and formatting
Leaving traces of success is an art that KERN has mastered – for you! KERN plays a decisive role in shaping your company’s image and gives it an external image that sticks in the minds of people who could become your customers. This gives you a presence in print media, on the internet, on radio and on television. Only when you are properly represented in advertising do you truly exist.
KERN turns your ideas into advertising concepts. When developing an advertising concept for the international market, both the visual factors and cultural aspects must be taken into account. Concepts and graphic products for the European market often do not lead to the expected success in the Eastern European, Asian or American markets. KERN can support you with its advertising experience and expertise in the design of your graphic products: our experienced DTP team gives your documents an aesthetically appealing and consistent appearance. We ensure that your content is perfectly tailored to the desired medium, be it printed materials or digital publications.
Fonts and foreign-language typesetting
The internationalisation of your products requires DTP experience, font knowledge and an understanding of the technical implementation options. The foreign-language typesetting and DTP team at KERN creates European, Oriental and Asian fonts in all layout programmes. KERN handles all foreign-language documentation, such as operating instructions, annual reports, information brochures, catalogues and other documents. Arabic, Chinese or Japanese fonts used by KERN for foreign-language typesetting can be used directly without any problems, even if you do not own the fonts yourself.
KERN’s services:
- Standardised foreign-language typesetting in files supplied by you or in layouts designed by KERN
- Text conversions / text entry
- Graphic design / layout
- Scans and image processing
- Final artwork, pre-press
- Film exposure
- Proofs
The DTP specialists at KERN are always available to discuss complicated foreign-language typesetting projects. Thanks to their many years of experience and state-of-the-art technical equipment, they can solve almost any typesetting problem. KERN will be happy to advise you and provide you with expert information.
Printing of foreign-language documents
KERN has extensive experience in implementing the peculiarities of different languages in printing technology. This allows font characteristics and typefaces to be captured in a way that is understandable to everyone and presented in a manner typical of the country.
Print preparation
In addition to traditional print preparation methods such as lithography, montage, reprography and plate copying, KERN works directly via data transfer or computer-to-plate (CTP) processes. Unlike conventional film exposure processes, the CTP process saves you montage and film costs. At the same time, this special process allows smaller screen dots to be produced, which results in higher-quality print results compared to conventional processes. KERN also creates typesetting and image data for you using high-resolution scanners, development and exposure equipment, and produces smooth-page films.
Printing process
Web offset: For larger print runs
Web offset offers consistent print quality and high ink coverage. Another advantage of web offset is that printing can be carried out on almost all materials, even non-absorbent ones. For large print runs, KERN prints for you using the web offset process, which can produce up to 5/5 colours and also allows for complex folds.
Sheet-fed offset: For small and medium print runs
Sheetfed offset printing offers colour intensity, register accuracy, brilliance and consistently good quality. Sheetfed offset printing is also advantageous for small print runs, heavy paper weights and special folds. Your KERN team will be happy to answer any specific questions you may have about sheetfed offset printing.
Digital printing: For small print runs of up to approx. 500 copies
In digital printing, the print image is transferred directly from the computer to the printing machine, so that, unlike offset printing, no fixed printing template is required. By eliminating film, fixing baths and aluminium plates, digital printing is not only environmentally friendly, but also allows you to complete your print job quickly. Often, there are only 48 hours between the print job and completion, and even less if required. Digital printing is suitable for single and multi-colour mini runs, e.g. flyers, business cards, posters and manuals up to approx. 500 pieces.
KERN offers screen, inkjet or laser printing depending on your needs and requirements and automatically calculates the optimal price-performance ratio for you when preparing a quote.

FAQ – desktop publishing
Do you have any questions about DTP translation and printing? Find answers here.
What is desktop publishing?
Desktop publishing (DTP) is the process of creating and designing documents and publications using specialised software. It ensures that text, graphics and layouts are optimally prepared for print and digital media such as brochures, flyers, books, magazines and websites.
DTP software allows you to select fonts, create layouts, adjust colours and insert content, resulting in visually appealing, consistent and professional designs for all types of media.
What is multilingual desktop publishing?
Multilingual desktop publishing (DTP) involves creating, formatting and editing documents and publications in multiple languages and writing systems. This specialised form of DTP is especially important for companies and organisations that operate internationally or communicate with audiences in different countries and regions.
Some of the main challenges associated with multilingual desktop publishing include correctly displaying different languages and scripts (e.g. Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic or Asian characters) and adapting layouts to varying text lengths and writing directions, whether left-to-right, right-to-left or vertical.
These challenges can only be met by a multilingual DTP team with the necessary experience and technical expertise. Our experts ensure that all translations are accurate and culturally appropriate, while layouts remain consistent and professional. All aspects of publications meet the specific demands of the target language, preserving your company’s brand image and messaging while ensuring effective communication in every target market.
