tekom – Europe’s largest professional association for technical communication
The Gesellschaft für Technische Kommunikation e.V. – tekom is the German professional association for technical communication.
It is a platform for the exchange of information and experience, and promotes the training and advanced qualification and further professionalisation of its members. tekom is actively committed to increasing the standing and position of technical communication in companies and among the public. It was established in 1978 in Stuttgart and has retained its offices there to this day.
Members
tekom is addressed to all those active in the field of technical communication or in other areas of information development and information management. These include, for instance, technical writers, technical illustrators or technical translators, product or marketing managers. Currently, tekom has almost 6000 members from all economic sectors, in several countries across Europe. There are 441 companies registered as corporate members. In the past, the number of new members has been increasing steadily, at ten to 15 percent per year.
Tasks and goals
The main goal of the association is to promote the career-political and business interests of all those involved with technical communication and documentation.
In recent years, tekom has been highly successful in its mission of developing and establishing the professional image of technical writers in the industry. Thanks to its efforts, the profession of the technical writer has had its own profession ID with the Federal Employment Agency of Germany since 1989.
Besides trying to establish the image of this profession, tekom strives constantly to make known to the public the concerns of technical communication and documentation.
Achievements and activities
tekom has taken it on as its responsibility to support professionalism, competence and motivation of all those engaged in technical communication, through appropriate measures.
