XML and E-Commerce Website Localisation

The rapid growth of e-Commerce websites as a sales vehicle for businesses attempting to break into new and international markets, places high demands on programmers, translators and localisers. The contents of these pages are often directly generated from databases and tend be developed in an XML format.

It is common for e-Commerce websites to consist of thousands of data records, which must then be translated by us into the desired language for you.

With E-Commerce websites it often happens that:

With e-Commerce websites it is often the case that:

  • Text lengths and field lengths respectively are strictly maintained during the translation process.
  • The content changes regularly and the translation must be available simultaneously in the respective languages.
  • The localiser must differentiate between text and the additional attributes of the XML code during translating.
  • Specific experience and tools are needed, in order to establish XML files as export and import files in Unicode.

The aspects mentioned above prevent the use of traditional translation tools and require the use of special localisation tools. For this we use specific e-Commerce extraction tools, which guarantee the function and quality of the website corresponding to the translation and localisation process.

In this current Internet age, multilingual company websites have become an international standard. To ensure a website’s, i.e. x-Commerce website’s internationalisation, it is often necessary to significantly adapt the available HTML files, Flash files, graphic files and scripts, etc.

Through our process we are able to ensure that the information or codes (font, date, time, currency and number formats, contact information, colours and text alignment, etc.) meet the expectations of your target group.

More complex websites are often based on a Content Management System (CMS), for example Typo3, Contenido, Joomla, Modx, etc., which can only be amended online. In such cases,we mainly use “CMS Extraction” tools for quality assurance.

In principle, the following items must be considered and processed during localisation:

  • Text in script files (e.g. Java or ASP scripts)
  • Adaptation of FAQs and help files
  • Creation of hyperlinks in the target language as in the source language
  • Special characters and fonts of the target language must be presentable
  • Checking of the layout and fonts in the current browsers
  • Text in buttons and graphics must be edited and prepared

Our website localisation specialists usually work directly in the HTML files, except with CMS websites. This reduces the time needed to insert translations or to re-format files. The website files are then ready for an upload straight away.

We can provide regular maintenance, changes and supplements to websites with the use of translation memory tools.

We use the following localisation tools:

  • Visual Localize
  • Catalyst
  • Passolo
